During the last 9 months (January - September 2007) I have found a way to make changes in my life which until now, I had talked about, but never been able to follow through with actions.
I’ve been able to identify the main areas of my life which I was unhappy with, decide what I would like to happen instead, and then attract in the opportunities which have enabled me to reach those goals. I now have the experience and belief to address further parts of myself and my life which I would like to change.
As I have mentioned before, the catalyst for all this was watching the film ‘The Secret’ back in January 2007. While I had heard of ‘The Secret’ before watching it, I had no pre-conceptions other than it was something to do with this whole ‘create your own reality’ phrase which I kept hearing, but didn’t really understand.
The film is, as I mentioned before, a bit cheesy in places, and certainly at the start I was sitting there thinking ‘yeah yeah…this amazing secret which will change my life yada yada’, but I have to admit that I was taken aback when, the further through the film I got, the more I found myself agreeing with the majority of the statements it made.
The film starts off explaining that everything we understand as ourselves / our world / our universe is made of energy. Then explains that because we’re all made of the same stuff (energy), we are all connected.
It then talks about our thoughts, and how when we create a thought, this creates a magnetic impulse which affects the energy frequency which we resonate at and project out.
Because everything is connected, when we change our frequency, this affects the frequency of everything around us.
The film then goes on to say that the type of thoughts you produce and spend time focusing on, have an affect on the type of experiences you attract into your life. This is because energy vibrating at a particular frequency attracts other energy also vibrating at that frequency. So if you are thinking positive thoughts, you are attracting positive experiences, and if you are thinking negative thoughts, you are attracting negative experiences.
There are two basic types of thought: positive thoughts and negative thoughts. Obviously there can be many levels of variance between a positive and a negative thought, but the basis of this understanding is that all thoughts have an underlying feeling attached to them.
When talking about our thoughts, there are two basic feelings: a thought which makes you feel good, or a thought which makes you feel bad - also referred to as love and fear.
Once you are conscious of the thoughts you are having and how they make you feel, you can start to control your thoughts. This is how you start to create your own reality, by choosing to think thoughts which focus on what you want in your life, what makes you feel good, rather than thoughts which focus on what you don’t wan’t in your life, or what you’re afraid might happen.
The whole process which is summarised above is referred to in the film as ‘the law of attraction’ - like attracts like.
My own experience of this process is that it has fundamentally changed my life. In the last 9 months I have used the law of attraction to bring into my life:
- A £5000 pay rise
- A camper van (an old 70’s VW too!)
- A new job offer with a company I’ve always wanted to work for
- Sums of money whenever I have really needed them
But the biggest effect that this whole process has had, is to change how I live day-to-day. For example: before if I had a meeting at work which I knew was going to be an unpleasant one, I would worry about it and go through all the worst case scenarios in my head, whereas now, I visualise how I want the meeting to go and thats what happens.
One thing to mention before I finish this article, is that when you’re visualising what you want to happen in your life, you must choose things which you believe could happen to you and which make you feel good / happy. If you choose something which you don’t believe could come into your reality, all you’re focusing on is the lack of it, and thats what you get - the lack of it.
